She engages with the visual and material language of these processes, making visible the subtle, often overlooked dynamics that permeate urban space. At the core of the work is the tension between the unstoppable force of nature and humanity’s efforts to control it: roots breaking through asphalt, ivy winding through fences—symbols of a resilient nature that asserts itself despite urban constraints. Based on her intensive observations of Berlin, the artist examines the complex interplay between the city, nature, and capitalist environmental strategies, particularly in the context of so-called ‘green’ investments and their often ambivalent effects. A massive, sprawling arch structure forms the centerpiece of the installation. Its scorchmarks evoke industrial production processes, while its form conjures romantic associations with an idealized natural landscape. But this illusion crumbles: a large, tree-like sculpture lies uprooted on the ground, symbolizing the tension between natural growth and human intervention. On the walls, algae growth appears to rise—a painterly extension of the practice, oscillating between control and chance. The windows are coated with a greenish film that distorts the view of the outside world, as if a veil has been placed over perception. Architectural elements of the space are deliberately integrated to challenge the boundaries between the interior and exterior. By using materials in various stages of decay, the artist makes the constant transition between growth and decomposition visible. Steinunn Önnudóttir views the processes of growth and decay as metaphors for confronting the capitalist logic that exploits nature as a resource while simultaneously attempting to domesticate its uncontrollable aspects. Her work is grounded in a critical engagement with the concepts of ‘Green Growth’ and ‘Degrowth’—two opposing positions within the ecological sustainability debate. While ‘Green Growth’ drives economic expansion through technological innovation and supposedly sustainable production methods within a capitalist framework, ‘Degrowth’ advocates for a radical reduction in economic activities to preserve natural resources. Through her work, Steinunn Önnudóttir investigates how the term ‘green’ is increasingly instrumentalized to conceal capitalist agendas. Yet beyond the political dimension, the installation remains a silent, powerful image of the inevitability of natural processes—the flow of time, the ephemeral, and the uncontrollable. The installation becomes a stage where nature and artifice collide—a scene between idyll and disaster, utopia and decay. The elements in the space appear as relics from a past or future time, oscillating between construction and deconstruction, control and chaos. feigðarós — dreamfields feigðarós — dreamfields is not a traditional group exhibition but a collaborative artwork,­ a show where the artists’ individual ideas and artistic palettes have blended and transformed as they got to know each other’s work and thought processes. The installation is an immersive environment where viewers can walk around sculptures that render an otherworldly vista. It offers a journey of organic, simulated, abstract and invented textures in a landscape implying desolation while drawing up scenes both in miniature and monumental scale. Parallel to the installation the artists photographed textural experiments placed in odd but familiar surroundings, and exhibited both in the show and catalogue. The catalogue also has new texts written by four Icelandic authors; Bergþóra Snæbjörnsdóttir, Guðrún Eva Mínervudóttir, Gunnar Theodór Eggertsson and Tyrfingur Tyrfingsson who thoughtfully shared &nbsp; Ever since in classical antiquity, the painting has, among other things, been used to imitate the real world and deceive the eye. It has been referred to as a window to another dimension. Steinunn Önnudóttir’s exhibition is a still life of sorts, simultaneously a painting and an installation. In chasing the real world, we get a glimpse of a struggle between the material and the intention. Steinunn approaches the work on the terms of the painting and stretches the concept’s form, material and texture. &nbsp; &nbsp; Steinunn deals with painting tradition in a wide sense, exploring the characteristics of the material and its manifestation through history and into the present. She reflects on reality and mimesis, what it and what pretends to be. Can something exist without existing in reality? How true to the original does the copy have to be? Is it enough to present a substitute, for a concept to take off? As well as pondering these questions, Steinunn invites the viewer to become a subject in the painting as soon as they enter the space. &nbsp; &nbsp; The title of the exhibition is a reference to the ancient view of the Greeks and Romans, who believed that the world’s end lay beyond the Strait of Gibraltar. “Non plus ultra” is Latin for “No more beyond”. By using this title, Steinunn refers to that which we do not see. ] &nbsp; &nbsp; In the piece ‘Man-made — for the meek’ we see an exotic world, a model of sorts, with various things from diverse materials. The model resembles a place where we can see a miniature landscape which can be visualised on a larger scale. It consists of many small sculptures which refer to nature both in material and form. The model can be viewed as a sort of staged future, where strife and history are behind us and only the remains of an inscrutable culture are left in the sand. The piece also reminds us of a playground convered in sand. Sandboxes were among the first organised playground equipment in public spaces in Germany in the 19th century, based on the ideas of pioneer Friedrich Fröbel. He, more than any othereducational specialists, emphasised the importance of children playing and believed that through creation and play they could gain an interest in their environment and learn to show responsibilty. &nbsp; &nbsp; Steinunn wonders whether man views nature as their playground, whether we have got carried away in our playing and forgotten the responsibility which comes with being caretakers of the future. It is possible that the education system has succumbed to industrialisation where the breaking down of the components, the uniformity and the submissiveness stifle creative thinking and diversity. WIND. The exhibition’s conceptual frame is based on the title of the series and refers to the wheel of fortune (Rota Fortunae), a symbol of progression and the cycle of life but is also a reference to the world itself; the wheel as an ever-turning hemisphere. The story of the wheel of fortune has its roots in the determinism of humankind, where the goddess Fortuna was believed to decide the fate of every human by spinning a wheel they were stuck on. In that way, some were truly fortunate in life and others were victims of bad luck, but through the symbol of the wheel one can sense that man has long realized that earthly existence is quite transitory. And now it seems that man is finally comprehending that the world he inhabits is also impermanent. Thus, the term Anthropocene is generally used to describe a new epoch, where man and his systems are formative powers that transform Earth in an unprecedented and irreversible way. The objective of the exhibition GONE WITH THE WIND was to deal with urgent questions about the cohabitation of man (or artist) and Earth; how visual arts can display and address the Anthropocene , which should much rather be called the Capitaloscene, as it is subject to economic and ecological changes. The exhibition was an endeavor to present answers to these questions in various ways but overall, it was a journey through a transient world, where the possibilities of life in capitalist ruins were sought.* [ . . . ] However, Steinunn Önnudóttir’s work, Casablanca, addresses the past of the district in which it has been placed. The work is in a green area above Háagerði in the Smáíbúðahverfi, but similar to the case of Steingrímur Eyfjörð and Unnar Örn, it is also conceived as a monument. The work is an approximately 3–meter–tall sculpture in steel and a nod to one of the main characteristic features of the houses around the district; here, countless railings and fences can be found, made of wrought iron, twisted or molded into various shapes, demonstrative for some delicate craftmanship. Steinunn, who has a personal connection to the neighborhood has watched how this characteristic is gradually disappearing as the houses have been altered and expanded as time has progressed.&nbsp; Thereby, the work is a reference beyond itself to details in our nearest environment which have been overlooked by us — to unpretentious beauty the artist wants us to notice.
